With it’s fluid integration of dance and drama, knockabout comedy, adult emotions, jazz, classical music and the popular ballad, ON THE TOWN stands as one of the great innovative works in the history of the musical theater. Undoubtedly one of Bernstein’s most interesting scores, constantly producing style and wit, the show includes the poignant and beautiful song "Lonely Town". Ahead of it’s time in many ways ON THE TOWN was heralded at it’s release as the most engaging musical since the golden days of Oklahoma! Later immortalised in the film starring Gene Kelley and Frank Sinatra the theme and songs remain as enjoyable today as they were 50 years ago.

Bringing the recording right up to date with the best that modern recording has to offer, producer John Yap has used the original orchestrations, with a full symphony orchestra and an all star cast drawn from the stage screen and television. As such the recording is part of the JAY Original Master Works Edition series utilising the original book, music, lyrics and orchestrations. By using the original version the essence of the masterwork has been preserved in Digital Dolby Surround Sound for the first time.
