The British have always been slow to acknowledge the worth of their own creative artists.  Even commercial succss is not always enough to ensure that the compose, painter or author is accorded their due.  It isn't a surprise the most performed of all of our opera composers of the 19th Century, (Sir Arthur Sullivan) hasn't had one of his works performed at The Royal Opera House in living memory. No other country would ignore such a figure - Strausse and Lehar entered the repertory in Vienne long ago: Offenbah in Paris, even Gershwin at The Met in New Yorks stand as accepted parts of their respective countries.

Is it British snobbery because of the light and satiric nature of of Gilbert and Sullivan works? One cannot help a sneaking suspician that it is. The wod OPERA instils a kind of fear into many an impresario, but it was Richard D'Oyly Carte himself who chose the epithet, not only of G&S works but for the other peices presented by his company.
